I can’t say this was a good race at all for me. When the results went up on Monday I was surprised to see that I came 6th U17, I thought I had done much worse because I know I could have performed better. Lancing isn’t too far away so I spent the morning relaxing. I had a fab breakfast of Biscoff porridge, I finished off the jar of Biscoff spread and topped it with crumbled biscuit, sliced banana and yogurt. I then did a little bit of work – yes not so relaxing but it needed doing which meant that I could relax when I got back from the race as I knew I would be exhausted. I watched an episode of Grey’s Anatomy and then we left at 11:45. When we arrived we got our numbers, sorted out spikes and... then went on a course walk, we didn’t manage the whole course – which was a bad plan because I didn’t really know the course and I wasn’t sure how to pace myself for the “big hill”. I think this is one of the main reasons why my race didn’t go so well … I didn’t pace myself. I think some of the other reasons were that I was so tired from a full on week and I didn’t feel fab and neither did my knee.
In our U17, U20, senior women and veteran race we had to run 5K as usual of two bowling green laps and then one big lap with the hill. Looking back on it now, it was a really nice course that I wouldn’t mind running at a slower pace and more relaxed. The race set off rather fast and I tried to keep at the front, I overtook quite a few people within the first 2 small laps. We then began up the hill and I kept coughing which was so frustrating but I think I kept a good pace going up the hill, overtaking a few people and not letting others overtake me J (heehee) but then I couldn’t catch my breath as we were running up the last stretch of the hill, I tried to relax but we then started to go downhill and I was really tense and unfortunately quite a few people over took me and I was close to losing sight of the people that I was originally running with, this made me feel very disheartened. I tried to hold it together at the finish line but when Alice came over, just a few seconds after me, I had a little cry, which never normally happens but I guess “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”. I know I didn’t do badly, it just wasn’t my day. After, Beth and I warmed up with a hazelnut milk hot chocolate before we left to go home. When I got home, I cozied up in my onsie and watched a Christmas film. Sorry that this blog post hasn’t been the most positive but it shows that not every race is your best and it is just something to improve on for next time. I actually have SEAA inter-counties tomorrow in Oxford which I am really excited about so I am sure there will be a blog post on that race too – I hope it is much better than Lancing…I think it will be…hopefully. Next blog post will be Part 1 of my Pro Direct Running haul I think. Imogen xx
