2018 hasn’t exactly started the way I had planned; spending the past two months cross-training. 2018 kicked off with a good month of racing in January; including qualifying for English Schools but after the Southern XC championships at the end of January, I could no longer run to put it bluntly, I was gutted but thought I would be back in no time. Although it has only been 2months it has felt like forever. I am finally building it up again but still cannot run far on the roads - which sucks because I am meant to be doing the BM10k on the 15th of April and I fear I will not make it this year. However I would rather no run this race and run track season… So yes, this blog post is about my FIRST track season. I have never and I mean never ran on a track so I am pretty excited about this season. Most athletes take part in track and field events whilst at school but because I didn’t get into competitive running until I was in year 10 I never got the chance to + I was never selected. I always took part in the Chichester Corporate Challenge but that was as far as my competitive running for school went until year 10/11. When I spent my second pro-direct running voucher (blog post coming soon) I bought a pair of track spikes so I was ‘ready’ for track season! This Easter I am planning to go to Mountbatten to run on the track there otherwise I will turn up at the first track event having never run on a track which could (I mean I have no idea) put me at a disadvantage. 3000m – I think this will be my main event when racing on track because I am much better at ‘longer’ races and find it easier to pace myself. 5000m – as mentioned above, longer distances are much more ‘my thing’ but 5000m on track is 12.5 laps and I think I may get very bored but when I try running on a track later this Easter I will run 5000m and see… 1500m – I am a little unsure about this distance because I am not sure I will be able to run fast enough! Most people in the U20 age category will probably ‘know’ their races and focused on that distance but I may as well give it a try. “if you don’t try, you will never know” Steeplechase - Beth and Alice are very keen to do this, I think it would be fun but I would probably be the one to face plant when hurdling. I can just see it- I would jump onto the beam, not quite get my balance and then fall straight into the water! Hahaha Field events- If I were to do a field event I have no idea what I would do. I don’t have particularly long legs and am not the best jumper so triple jump, long jump, high jump etc are out of the running. Throwing… well… that would be interesting. I did discus at sports day one year and came 7th/8th so that is definitely not for me. Javelin I have only tried once. Basically what I am trying to say is that I don’t think I will be participating in the field events unless you want me to come last!!! Other track events… 800m- I am not fast enough for this event, I mean if they had no one to do it (which would be rare) I would rather do the 800 than the 400. I know Beth is quite good at the 800 so I will leave this one to you ;) Anything less than 800m – no, no, no. I seriously cannot sprint; only at the end of a race when I have a lot of adrenaline. The rest of the summer season… If someone asked me what ‘type of runner’ I was I would say a long distance and xc runner. Road racing is my favourite! (5km+). I have a number of races lined up for the summer if all goes well; hoping that I can get back to road running asap. As mentioned in my last blog post on swim sets, I am also very interested in taking up triathlon again so think I will do one or two triathlons this summer. I really, really want to do an aquathlon too as it incorporates my two favourite sports! HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE! [This weekend I have managed to do two runs. A birthday run on the South Downs on Friday and another run on the Downs with my mum on Sunday morning. Both of them were quite slow but at least I could get out there and start to build it up again. I still can’t run further than 2miles on the road so am sticking to a couple of runs on the trails this week. Perhaps I will be able to do the Sussex Road relays at the weekend but we will see (they aren’t much more than 2miles so fingers crossed)]
