As promised here is part 2 ‘Where am I going and what I am doing now’. Summer seems to have flown by and I can’t believe I am about to start my 3rd year of medical school, like, say what?!?! Next Monday I am back up to Nottingham. I always find it difficult settling back into a different routine at university, I am excited but also very nervous for what the year has in store. The first semester of 3rd year will be optional modules, lectures and writing my dissertation. The second semester marks the start of my clinical years in placement (ahhhh.) I am really looking forward to this as we can finally start to apply some of our knowledge along with developing our doctor-patient communicating skills, broadening our understanding and learning from the NHS. Another major aspect of university is my triathlon training. What a year it has been so far… this time last year I was hardly back to running after injury, now I have done 2 races with one more to go next week. I am not even close to full racing fitness, but I cannot wait for what this next year might hold (pray for no more injury.) Balancing medical school and training is not easy. I work my butt off in both but it requires tight time management and a whole lot of motivation (don’t forget the spoonful of sleep deprivation sometimes.) Obviously the structure of my course this year has changed (as mentioned above) so a new routine will be needed but that is absolutely ok as that is how life works. For the past two years I have been part of the performance squad for triathlon at university. I would like to reapply for my 3rd year but a) the costs have been ramped up and I’m no longer sure I can afford it b) some top level athletes are joining as freshers (the competition has increased) c) due to the uncertainty of this year I am not sure how much time I will have etc. If it weren’t for my coach on the performance squad, I definitely wouldn’t be back running again, I would’ve kept going in circles so for that I am very grateful, but now I want to show my full potential and get fully race ready for next season – the fire is burning and I am ready to work my butt off again. At this moment in time there isn’t much more to say as to ‘where I am going’ as it is all so uncertain but as for ‘what am I doing now’, well I am getting my stuff ready to go back to university, spending maximum time with my family and boyfriend and earning some more dolla at work.
A short and sweet post today but there will be a race report for the ‘National English Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships 2021’ soon. See you soon, Adios, Immy <3
