Long runs are by far my favourite runs because you can go exploring, long runs build up your endurance and test your mentality. However some days it is hard to stay motivated. This blog post is about some of the ways I stay motivated on long runs. a) Running with a friend/family member
I think this is the best way to stay motivated because you can chat and before you know it you have completed the run. Beth and I often go on long runs together and it is a really good time to catch up with each other after a week of school. b) Music/headphones Until recently I didn’t listen to music when on a run because it really messed up my running rhythm and pace but I have grown to like it and it definitely keeps me going when I am feeling demotivated, sometimes I forget I am even running. Spotify is a fab app to use for music because you can have multiple playlists for your different moods with all your favourite tunes. c) Counting down not up This is a bit of a strange one but I do find it sometimes helps. If I am tired towards the end of the run and just want to finish I often think “only 1.5miles left” for example. If you begin to lose motivation at a certain point don’t think… “uhhh I have only done X amount of miles” because this will only make you feel worse. This leads me onto… d) In the mood Sometimes people think “I must do X amount of miles/kms otherwise….” This is not the attitude you should have and I have to admit that I have thought this a number of times but as I said in another blog post, if you are not in the mood or too tired just see how far you can go, you might find that if you think “I will just go as far as I can” you will end up running further than you planned but if you don’t run as far as you wanted it really doesn’t matter there is always tomorrow or next week. Running is to be enjoyed, not to be hated! e) Exploring… As I said at the beginning exploring is a great way to stay motivated on a long run because there is so much to see and you are focusing on where you are going to go rather than the distance. I love running on the South Downs or by the coast for my long runs. f) Morning runs Sometimes getting out the door is the hardest part for some people so by going in the morning you are not thinking about it all day to go in the afternoon, also I find that running in the mornings puts me in a good and productive mod for the rest of the day. In the winter it is cold in the mornings but the sun if often very pretty and although it frosty it is very fresh, just make sure you have enough layers on. Hope this helps xx Imogen
