We are slowly getting there. The biggest issue with this injury was not knowing what it was for so long and then giving myself false hope thinking I would be back sooner than I could be. I have had to drop out of multiple races including the BM10k next weekend; if I were to race the 10k I think I would be back to square one. This weekend’s blog post was going to be a race recap of the Sussex road relays but seeing as I didn’t do them in the end (good decision –thanks to everyone who helped me decide) I can’t write a race recap haha. The past few weeks/month I have felt like I have been taking one step forwards and two steps backwards however this week everything has begun to fall into place and I am definitely on the road to recovery. I make this sound like it is a huge injury (eg stress fracture) so sorry but any injury is a bummer! The last few weeks I have been trying to do a few short runs on grass - which often meant verge running (I will have you know it is a pain) to get to a trail or grassy area. After English Schools, which went well despite my lack of preparation, I waited two weeks before I ran again. Friday 30th March As most of you know, for my birthday I went on a run with my chums on the Downs. Being my first run back after English schools we didn’t go at a fast pace + it was pretty hilly and involved some mud skating at times. Total distance: 7.2km 1st April The next run I did was on Easter Sunday with my mum, also on the Downs. While this was a very enjoyable run, it was a mistake going this far and that soon after my birthday run. Although my ankle wasn’t extremely painful I could feel it. The run was all on trail/mud/grass. Running in the mud and uphill was absolutely fine but it was the chalky downhill that was a little painful. Total distance: 9.2km (at a very slow pace) After a conversation with my mum, we decided I should try and run every other day this week (even if it were just 1 mile) to try and get used to running again because my tendon had got super stiff and I needed to get it moving again. Any ‘bad’ pain I felt I would stop and not run for the next few days but luckily all went to plan… 3rd April This was a very easy run on a trail near me but of course I had to run on the verges to get there. I ran to the trail and then went for the walk-run-walk-run method. Total distance: 3km Swim: 2.3km 5th April Beth and I went for a bike ride in the morning. First proper ride on the new road bike and I am a big fan! Total distance: 38.8km At this point I thought I was going to run the road relays on the 7th so felt I should do one last test run. I ran at my grandparents so it was a nice change in scenery + there is a large park to run on. I went with the walk-run-walk-run approach again. Total distance: 3.8km After realising that I can’t really run on road which would’ve been a bit of an issue, I decided that the road relays would be a bad idea. 7th April 1st trial run on road. 2/3 of the run was on road and it went surprisingly well. Total distance: 4km Swim: 2.3km 8th April Today I decided not to go to the gym or the pool (mainly because my shoulders are dead from two tough swim sets this week) so I tried a Sunday long run…well what is currently classed as a long run. I did the same loop I did yesterday but twice and really enjoyed it even though the weather was rubbish (typical British weather). Ankle held up ok which is positive. Total distance: 7.3km 7km Vs 12km+ Not exactly SLR but it is progress. I hopped into an ice bath after. I am not sure the verb ‘hopped’ is the right one, more like moaned as I slowly climbed in. For every run this week I have stretched for 15mins before and after and iced for 30mins after! I am not planning to run until Wednesday now, when I am going to the track. That will be the decider if I am going to run in the first Sussex athletics league race on the 14th. In the meantime I will be watching the Commonwealth games; what a good few days coming up. https://results.gc2018.com/en/athletics/daily-schedule.htm I would say this week has been quite busy with training but we are getting there, just slowly…
