Here we are in the middle of a pandemic about to start university again. I’ve been moved into my new house for a week and start lectures tomorrow; going to be a new experience with socially distanced practicals and the change of lectures to online, this could all be the new normal though. Whether you are starting university for the first time or returning after 6months away I thought I would share a few of my top tips to start the year feeling GOOOD!! 1. Stay busy The first week back at university can be overwhelming and you may feel a little lost with no routine/change in routine. I especially struggle with the change in routine but planning things to do really helps me. The first few days in freshers I planned
2. Textbooks You don’t need to buy lots of textbooks to start the term with, in fact I’ve only got one textbook from year 1, of which I hardly used. The libraries will have pretty much all the textbooks you use and if not, you can look for second hand sales in the university. Brand new textbooks are super expensive, you don’t want to be too keen, buy an expensive textbook which turns out being the wrong one/not the best one. 3. Emotions Moving to university/back to university is very different from home, you are a lot more independent and there are a lot of changes going on (especially this year with COVID-19.) I would say let yourself feel the range of emotions, IT IS NORMAL, REMEMBER PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE IS IN THE SAME BOAT! Don’t bottle it up! 4. Allow time for yourself The first few weeks of university are loaded with social interaction; meeting new people, freshers (however it may be this year) and living with new people. It is super important to make time for yourself too in the busy-ness; take time to relax, try to get some decent sleep, give yourself time to settle in and adapt (it won’t be immediate as it is a big change!) 5. Freshers friends During the first few weeks everyone will be in the same boat, pretty much not knowing anyone and feeling slightly lost. This is totally ok and normal, but I want to say during this time you may meet and speak to people that you think will be your ‘group’ and close friends for university but everything changes. Yes, they may be your best mates, some of the people (inc. my flatmates now housemates) you will remain very close to but others you will drift apart from as you each individually grow and settle in. You will meet new people throughout the whole of your university experience so there is no rush to find ‘your future bestie’ in the first week. 6. Eat properly
University students are renowned for eating ‘interesting’ meals and not the typical 3 meals a day, but it is so important to nourish yourself and make meal times a routine (ish) – I promise it will make you feel better! Of course, sometimes you will not feel like cooking but make sure you always have something quick, easy and ‘proper’ to eat. I find that batch cooking works best for me, I always have leftovers/other portions for another meal time. You’ve got this! Let’s all go smash this year, corona or not! If anyone wants to chat or is feeling a bit out of sorts, I’m just a message away and would be very happy to chat with you x Immie <3
