After a conversation with Emma on Thursday about her blog post, burning out and listening to your body I thought it would be fitting to do a post on it as it an important topic. The last few weeks I have felt exhausted and unmotivated to train which may be due to end of term parties or the winter cold that everyone seems to have had. I have had many spontaneous rest days and taken training easy, no not because I am being lazy close to Christmas but because I know I needed to rest and let my body recover. I can tell you it pays off! This weekend I felt much stronger after a few weeks of little and easy training and today I smashed out a 4km swim!!! The longest swim I have done since the sponsored 5kms I did in March. Burnout and hitting a wall Kirk J. Cureton (2009) mentions Dr Gould’s definition of athlete burnout “a syndrome characterised by emotional and physical exhaustion and reduced sense of accomplishment.” Hitting the wall is a common term used in racing when you become fatigued due to a depletion in glycogen stores. This can also occur in training if you are not fueling yourself sufficiently. Listening to your body As athletes we strive to be better so create expectations and sometimes unrealistic goals which don’t take into account setbacks and unplanned breaks from training. Often you don’t recognise that your body is ‘giving you signals’ to slow down or take a break because you are so focused on hitting those goals. I don’t mean to be deep and spiritual but listening to your body is essential to improve as an athlete and reduces the risk of overtraining and mental health problems. A quote from Emma “listen to your body whisper before it shouts!” I think this addresses this issue because you need to recognise that niggles and fatigue can escalate and lead to further complications. How?
I hope this a little bit helpful and you all have a fab Christmas!!! Immie <3
