BLOG |
Long time, no post. I am going to be sharing a 3 part blog series with you over the next few weeks talking about athlete mentality from the perspective of training, racing and injury. I decided to write about this because: 1) I felt pretty down about injury as everyone raced at English schools XC. 2) of a discussion with my mum in Sheffield about her Masters (on emotional regulation and mentality in students). I have researched the effects of exercise on the body and emotions associated with exercise in depth for my EPQ but I am no expert in this. I thought it would helpful to share some of my tips and experiences. I am going to start with mentality in training. This is something that I really struggled with a few years ago as I didn’t really have a goal, I just wanted to get better but didn’t know how so I just ran and ran and ran which ultimately led to injury. Mindset Are you training to clear your head or do you have something you want to achieve from this session? Personally I think these two situations require two different mindsets. Clearing your head: ‘run to feel!’ I don’t think a session like this requires speed nor do you need to be mentally tough but you do need to realise that sometimes a session like this is needed and you don’t always have to be pushing yourself to the limit. Training session: This is when your grit, determination and perseverance all come into play. A hard session will bring about the “I can’t…” thoughts but you need a strategy to turn these thoughts into “I can.” Of course this will be different for every individual but we all have the same goal - to be better than the person we were yesterday. Don’t ever compare yourself to others! Changing the ‘I can’t’ into ‘I can’:
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster… "If you think you can't, you won't and if you think you can, you will" - Kellie Wells "My mom has always told me to be the best me, to be the best Simone, just because whenever I'm out there on the floor, it's all up to me and whatever happens, they'll love me no matter if I win or lose or decide to quit tomorrow. It's all up to me." ~Simone Biles My mantras:
There is so much out there on this topic and I have only just touched on it but I hope you found it interesting. I would love to hear your training mantras and how you get though hard sessions. Immie <3
